I listen to the stories of so many stuck in the diet mentality and not being able to recall a time when they were not on a diet. I empathise with the person in front of me sharing their story because being stuck in this mindset is torment and absolutely unnecessary! I understand being told to ditch the diet mentality is a lot harder than it sounds and takes a lot of dedication and time, but it is possible to live a life free from diets and to be happy!
The first step of getting out of the diet mentality is to stop restricting and depriving your body of the foods it needs and wants. Yes, you heard me right, wants, not just needs!
The diet mentality voice sounds a little like this:
- I can’t have that
- I must choose this
- I am not allowed that
- I feel like that but must have this
- If only I could have that
To start quieting down this utterly unhelpful noise, instead of restricting food, start choosing foods according to which foods help serve your health! Flip restriction on its head by changing your focus entirely. Instead of living according to a weight conscious perspective, live according to a health perspective. The change and freedom that can result from making this one simply change to your mindset is remarkable!
