Weight loss: decrease in body weight
Resistance: inability, refusal, opposition
Weight loss resistance: the inability to lose body weight despite repeated efforts
Do you follow a low carb, paleo, clean eating regime coupled with an exercise routine designed to make any old athlete feel threatened by? And you are still not getting anywhere? Nada. Negative. None! Are you sick and tired of asking yourself 'Why can't I lose weight?'
The dreaded weight loss resistance is popping up more than ever, as we become more confused, sold more false information and have stronger demands placed on us, we simply aren’t coping and things just don’t work like they used to! We need more answers!
The old energy in and energy out equation is simply failing some of us at its core. Its time to look at what else could be at play?
As a Nutritionist it’s my job to do plenty of investigative work to find out what is truly at the heart of your weight loss resistance. Today I am introducing you to some of the often overlooked factors which may be at play:
Stress – Blood Sugar Balance – Cortisol
'Stress will make you fat;' we have all heard it before but never consider it actually may apply to us. Stress? Im not stressed. Sound familiar? Insulin will encourage fat storage and excess cortisol will mobilise sugars which will then be stored for fat if not burnt off – finding a balance between insulin and cortisol is critical for weight loss.
Oestrogen encourages fat and energy storage, females have more oestrogen receptors than males – hence their tendency to store more fat. An overall healthy oestrogen balance is essential for fat loss and weight maintenance. And looking at liver health is key!
We all know the thyroid controls metabolism and hence fat storage, if its not working optimally it will place a halt on fat burning as a priority and reserves will be stored for back up.
Inflammation and Lack of Alkalinity
Both obesity and inflammation occur vice versa, we need to tackle inflammation as part of a weight loss plan; this can be achieved via diet, stress relief, lifestyle modification and nutritional supplementation.
Individuals with low microflora richness and diversity have higher incidence of obesity. There are certain species of bacteria which harvest more calories from food compared to other species. Having a higher percentage of this specie may result in a surplus supply of calories.
Poor Energy Utilisation
Micronutrients are the key to metabolic efficiency, focusing on counting nutrients and not calories will help boost the overall nutrient density of the diet and not to mention lower stress levels!
Toxins are obstructers of function and are often fat-soluble and stored in fat tissue, the more toxins the more fat needed to store them!
If you have a niggling feeling that your weight loss efforts are currently being let down by any of the factors above, I have a particular interest digging deep to find out what the root cause of a patients weight loss resistance may be! It is possible to overcome and will lead to a much healthier, enjoyable, balanced lifestyle minus the drill Sargent regime.
