A common theme I am seeing is the setting of unrealistic expectations. When we do this, we are automatically setting ourselves up to fail. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!!
A classic example illustrating this point perfectly is weight loss. Many people set a weight loss target based on a number they last felt in control of. By in control I mean, they felt ok with the number reflected back on the scales and their lifestyle, stress, hormones, diet and exercise regime allowed them to sit at this number. Unfortunately for most, this number was many moons ago. Fast forward 10-15 years, some people still feel this is the number they should be at if they had a magic weight wand.
Whilst I am in agreement we should never settle for less and instead aim high, setting the bar too high only does damage. If we don’t reach the number we set our sights on, we will consider this a complete failure, laziness on our behalf and feel out of control. No amount of weight lost will be good enough. We just wont be satisfied. This mindset does not help anybody and especially someone looking to lose weight. Weight loss is a commitment and takes time. Some of us understandably, want instant gratification for our hard work. This is another area where we set unrealistic expectations. The fruits of our weight loss labour take time but are worth it in the end. Trust me!! Its about enjoying the journey and creating a healthier lifestyle overall.
So the next time you set a goal, whatever it may be, first think about how realistic it is. Are you wishing for something, which deep down you know you can’t have? When talking about weight, this is called a weight conflict. Your subconscious knows your weight loss goal may not be achievable so you up sabotaging your own efforts, without even knowing it!
Try also looking back upon past goals, which you have not met, and consider whether the reason you didn’t meet them was because it actually wasn’t possible at the time. And please stop berating yourself over it; be easier on yourself! Or if you feel this may be at the heart of why you aren't meting your goals, it might be time to reassess and reach out!
